How many mafia at the table
How many mafiosi there are depends on the number of players and on whether the doctor is in the game; the mafia is never more than a third of the table.
In short
- The players at the table are counted; a live host isn't among them.
- The don is included in the number of mafia: one mafioso means just the don.
- 4–6 players — one mafioso, 7–8 — two.
- A doctor in the game adds one more mafioso at 9 and 12 players; the prostitute doesn't change the number.
- The mafia is never more than a third of the table.
The game decides how many mafia there are at the start; the room owner doesn't set this number. It depends on two things:
- how many people are playing (a live host isn't counted: in a room with one, one fewer plays than there are seats);
- whether the doctor is switched on in the room.
The don is included in the number: one mafioso means just the don.
The doctor helps the town the most: he can directly cancel a shot. So with the doctor there are more mafia when there are 9 or 12 players at the table. The prostitute doesn't change the number of mafia: her action doesn't always work, so no extra mafioso is added for her.
How many mafiosi (including the don):
- 4–6 players: 1, with or without the doctor;
- 7–8 players: 2, with or without the doctor;
- 9 players: 2 without the doctor, 3 with the doctor;
- 10–11 players: 3, with or without the doctor;
- 12 players: 3 without the doctor, 4 with the doctor.
The limit is a third of the table: at 9 players no more than 3, at 12 no more than 4.
The number of mafia affects how the game starts. If there are two or more mafiosi, the game starts with dealing the roles and an acquaintance night. If there's one mafioso (the don), there's nobody to meet, and the game starts with a day right away.
