Camera, microphone and devices: what to do if the browser can't see them
Allow the browser to use the camera and microphone when it asks. If a device isn't seen, check the permission for the site and pick a device in the menu next to the buttons.
In short
- The game works in Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox on a phone, tablet and computer. There's nothing to install.
- The browser asks for camera and microphone permission together: allow both. Without a camera you can't connect to the game, and without a microphone nobody will hear you.
- Denied permission by accident? Allow it in the site settings in the browser and refresh the page: you'll return to the same game.
- Camera not showing: close the app that's holding it (for example, a video call) and pick the camera in the menu next to its button.
- An observer needs neither camera nor microphone.
Devices and browsers. You can play on a phone, tablet and computer, in Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox. You need both a camera and a microphone: without a camera you can't connect to the game, and without a microphone nobody will hear you. Once you're in the game you can turn the camera off, and your window shows an avatar instead of video. It's best to hold the phone upright: if you turn it sideways, a hint “Better in portrait” appears, but the game works that way too.
Camera and microphone permission. When you enter a game, the browser asks for permission to use the camera and microphone at once. Allow both. If you denied it by accident, go to the site settings in the browser, allow them and refresh the page. Video and sound go live to the players in the room and are not recorded anywhere. If you joined as an observer, you don't need the permission: you only watch and listen.
The browser can't see a device. Open the menu next to the camera button (the small arrow in the game's bottom bar) and press the “Video Settings” gear. If the camera didn't start, there'll be an explanation there:
- “Camera access denied”: allow access for the site in the browser settings;
- “No camera found”: connect a camera and try again;
- “Your camera is being used by another application”: close other apps that might be using it and try again;
- “Camera doesn't support the selected quality”: lower the video quality in the same settings;
- “Couldn't access the camera”: check your device and try again.
After fixing it, the easiest thing is to refresh the page: the game won't throw you out, you'll return to the same game. The microphone needs the same permission. Can't be heard? Check the permission and that the right microphone is selected. If you have several cameras or microphones, pick the one you want with the arrow next to its button (next to the microphone you can pick the speaker too, where the browser can do it).
