Glossary

Words you'll meet in the game and in this help.

Acquaintance night
A zero night when only the mafia wake, to see their own. There are no shots or checks in it; it happens only when there are two or more mafiosi. Read the article
Automatic host
A program on the server that runs the game in place of a person: it announces the phases by voice, keeps time and counts the votes. So nobody has to sit on the sidelines — all the seats at the table go to players. Read the article
Calibration
The first rated games: the rating is already being counted, but the number isn't shown, and you aren't on the leaderboard yet. Instead of the number you see how many games are left until calibration ends. Read the article
Chaos time
A short free talk when all the living players speak at once, without taking turns. In a room with the automatic host it comes in the morning after the night victim's last word and before the speeches, from day 2. Read the article
Citizen
An ordinary resident without night abilities: sleeps at night, and by day acts with words and votes. “The town” also means the whole team — together with the sheriff, doctor and prostitute; they win when all the mafia are out. Read the article
Day 0
The dealing of the cards, set apart as its own stage before the first night: nobody takes the floor, there are no nominations. It exists only in a game with two or more mafiosi, followed by the acquaintance night; with one mafioso the game starts straight with day 1. Read the article
Doctor
A town role: saves one player every night — if the mafia shot exactly them, they survive, and the prostitute's block on them disappears. You can heal yourself only once per game. Read the article
Don
The leader of the mafia: shoots with the mafia, and in his own window also checks one player — whether they're the sheriff. If the don is the only mafioso, he does both actions in a row. Read the article
Extra speech
A one-off speech out of turn: the defense of candidates before a revote, or the last word of a player who is being eliminated. Its length is set by the “Defense” setting. Read the article
Ghost
A player who was killed and chose to stay in the game as a spectator: sees all the roles and night actions and writes in the dead chat. They can no longer play and won't go back to normal mode; when the match ends, everyone is an ordinary participant again. Read the article
Host
The person who runs the game but doesn't play: starts the day and night, gives the floor, runs the voting and watches the rules. Sees everyone's roles and night actions. Read the article
Immunity
Protection at the start of the game: a player with immunity can't be killed on the first night or nominated for the vote, and it lasts until the start of the second night. It goes to whoever was the first out in the last match, and to only one player per game. Read the article
Mafia
The team of villains (mafiosi and the don) who shoot one player at night: a shot counts only if all the living mafia chose the same target. The mafia wins when there are at least as many of them as living townspeople. Read the article
Match
One game from start to finish. You can play several matches in a row in the same room.
Megaphone
A button that for a few seconds opens your microphone during someone else's speech so you can throw in a remark. After that the megaphone recharges — a ring on the button shows how much is left. Read the article
Mic lock
While another player has the floor, you can't turn your own microphone on — a lock appears on the microphone button. You can cut in with the megaphone, and to talk longer you need the host's permission. Read the article
Night turn
Your action at night — a shot, check, heal or visit — which you make while your role is awake. With the automatic host it has a timer — the “Night turn” setting; for the mafia it's longer, depending on the number of mafiosi. Read the article
Nomination
Putting a player up as a candidate for the vote: you can vote only against nominated players. Only the one who is speaking nominates, and only one candidate (in a room with a live host, the host can nominate too); the same player can't be nominated twice. Read the article
Observer
A person who doesn't play in the room but just watches: they can't be seen or heard at the table. They can see everyone's roles (optionally) and write in the observers chat; the host can invite them into the game between matches. Read the article
Player window
One player's video in the table grid, labeled with their nickname. It shows the role (if you're allowed to see it), votes, a muted microphone and other game marks. Read the article
Preset
A saved set of room settings. You can create your next room from it in one click, without the form. Read the article
Private game
A room you enter with a password: a lock stands next to it in the game list. A person invited by a link and a friend called into the room enter without a password. Read the article
Prostitute
A town role: every night “visits” one player — and the next day that player can neither speak nor vote. That is the prostitute's block. Read the article
Prostitute's block
A player the prostitute visited at night doesn't speak or vote the next day: a kiss mark lies on their window (by day the whole table sees it), and during the vote the text “cannot vote” appears. They can be nominated, and a doctor who healed that same player that same night lifts the block. Read the article
Random vote
If you don't vote before the end of the round, the system gives your vote to a random candidate — and if there's a choice, not to you yourself. That way the game doesn't freeze because of someone who walked away from the screen. Read the article
Rated game
A finished game after which your rating changes: there must be enough players at the table, the host must not have removed players by hand or changed mid-game, and no living players may have been kicked. Otherwise the game is unrated, and the victory screen shows the reason. Read the article
Revote
A second round of voting among the candidates who tied. Before it each of them gives an extra speech — a defense. Read the article
Room owner
The one who created the room and chose its settings. In a room with the automatic host they run it — they can kick an offender, restart or end the match; if they leave, this right passes to another player, and returns to them when they come back.
Sandbox
A practice game on the real interface, but without other players, statistics or rating. It consists of tracks: the basic course and sessions for individual roles. Read the article
Scheduled game
A meetup at a set time, one-off or weekly: the server opens the room for it by itself shortly before the start, and followers get a notification. Such a game can't be started earlier than the set time. Read the article
Sheriff
A town role: checks one player every night and learns whether they're mafia or not. To the sheriff, the don is “Mafia” too. Read the article
Speech
Your turn to talk by day: while a speech is on, everyone else stays quiet. The floor goes around the living players; the room sets the time, and you can end early with the “Thanks” button. Read the article
Star of the game
A distinction for the winner whom the most players liked after the game, but at least three. It's shown as a crown on the victory screen, counted in the profile and recorded in the game history summary. Read the article
Table language
The language (one to three) spoken in the room: the owner chooses it when creating the room, and in the game list it's shown next to the room. It's a hint for searching, not a rule: it affects neither the game itself nor the interface language. Read the article
Tie
Two or more candidates got the same number of votes in the vote, so nobody is chosen right away. A revote between them follows; if it's a tie again, with the automatic host nobody is out that day. Read the article
Wake window
The part of the night when one role is awake and the rest sleep and can't see or hear those who woke. Even if all the holders of the role are already out, its wake window still goes by — so the rhythm of the night doesn't give away who died. Read the article
